Julieanne Savage > Porlock Weir pillboxes 1962

You can imagine how pleased I was to find this slide of Grandad's. I had it out on my desk for a while to scan, not realising the significance of what was on it.

The pillbox in front of the pub has been mercilessly and disgustingly destroyed. It was a concrete pillbox, re-inforced with stone. I came here as a girl but don't remember the pillboxes.

The pillbox to the right of the photo is one of two stone pillboxes along this stretch of beach. You can see here that it is already starting to slip down the beach. Today, it is almost covered.

I don't think Grandad was a particular pillbox fan, although he seems to have taken his family to various locations where there were pillboxes. I don't suppose it crossed his mind that one of his grandsons would marry a pillbox fan.

Julieanne Savage > Thamesmead. I walked a couple of miles from Woolwich pier to visit two pillboxes here.

This is one of Grandad Savage's slide. You can see Grandad standing there is his West Ham United shirt.
